Before You Buy - And After
Be a savvy consumer. Whatever project or financial transaction you may be considering, do your homework before signing documents or paying money.
Contact the local Better Business Bureau to find out if complaints are on file about a business you are considering.
The Virginia state Office of Consumer Affairs Web site has a great deal of information and you can file a consumer complaint online. If you are not sure where to file a complaint, there is a comprehensive list of issues and links to the appropriate agency for that type of complaint.
Other good sources include the Federal Trade Commission, Car Fax and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Before making a purchase from a retail merchant, ask about the store's return policy. The policy should be posted in the store, attached to the merchandise you are purchasing, or printed on the receipt.
Many contracts, including those for the sale of automobiles, do not contain a three day right of cancellation. Never assume that you have this right unless a cancellation policy is specifically stated in the contract.
Ask for a written estimate before hiring a company to perform home improvements, auto repairs, or any other type of repair work. Keep a copy of the estimate for your records
Never sign a blank contract or one you do not understand. Obtain a copy of anything you sign for your records.
