Introduction
Did you know that young children begin developing early literacy skills when they are very small? These are pre-reading skills, which is the knowledge children have about reading and writing before they can actually read and write.
The videos and information on these pages will give you simple tips and suggestions about how you, as parents and caregivers, can support your children in developing these building blocks to reading—just by engaging with your children in five basic practices: Singing, Playing, Talking, Reading,and Writing.
These are the basic practices that are part of Every Child Ready to Read, which is a joint initiative of the Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children.
