Be sure to use quotation marks to pinpoint names, compound terms or exact phrases. By default, all article types will be included in your search. To create more complex searches, see the Help link for Advanced Searches.
For dates of interest try a "browse" in the paper's edition for that date. Also consider browsing a few days past an important historical date, to allow for any delays in reporting "breaking news."

When searching for death notices or obituaries, add words and phrases to the search that will help narrow the results:
"departed this life"
"is survived by"
Hunting for Shipping News? Try a phrase like "ready to sail" or "bound for" or "arrived this week" when searching family names - it may help narrow the results. See if search results allow limits to the specific article type: Arrival and departure of ships in domestic and foreign ports
